Data Recovery Software Tips

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Have you managed to delete important data from your hard drive?  There should be no reason to worry as there are many data recovery solutions on the market capable of recovering your lost data for you, the key, when using software to recover your files is to follow a process that prevents any further harm coming to your data.

There are some important rules to adhere to when using data recovery software for recovering lost files:

Firstly and a big mistake many people make is not to install the software on the same computer you have been using, why? If you have deleted the file when you install any further software or save anything back to the disk, as the operating system will use what it considers free space to load the program you could end up overwriting the document or part of the document you are trying to recover.

Secondly, has your drive been making any strange sounds recently, if the answer is yes your hard drive may be failing so a recovery company would be better suited to recover your data to be on the safe side.

Thirdly whilst in all probability your prime focus will be to get your data back as soon as possible avoid the temptation to suddenly dive right in and purchase some software straight away. Most file recovery software will offer a free trial so at the very least you can do a scan to see if the document is actually still recognisable on your hard disk or even recoverable for that matter.

Assuming your drive is exhibiting no signs of failure and having used the software you have managed to find the file (intact) and it is recoverable you’ll now need to save the data somewhere. Under no circumstances save it back to the same drive as you may end up saving the data on back to the same area that the data is being recovered from resulting in a corrupted file.

If the recovery software has already reserved a disk area to write files back to some of the data can get overwritten especially if the drive is heavily fragmented.

If your data is simply too valuable to trust in the hands of software, particularly if you are not familiar with the data recovery software and the manner in which it works, it is sensible to contact a data recovery professional.

The cost for the recovery of files from a hard disk by a professional data recovery organisation is now in most cases comparable to the cost of the full version of the software that you have tried, plus you are normally backed up by a no recovery – no fee guarantee.

And lastly, if you choose to use a data recovery company, it is always worth ascertaining what will happen if the drive fails during a recovery process, will they be able to fix it themselves in a proper clean room environment or will they need to send it away to another data recovery company?

If they do not have the facilities for hard drive recovery and there is any sign of mechanical failure then a main data recovery expert company will be your best option.

CD DVD Disc Repair Machines

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Many of us by now have probably managed to amass rather large and impressive collections CDs, DVDs and game discs. As the discs get older and are used more often the possibility of damage increases as does need to effect repairs.

Many scratched DVD discs or other discs can simply be replaced at minimal cost and this holds true for CDs and game discs as well.

However the same can’t be said for scratched discs that are original recordings of your own personal memories such as home movies and digital photos stored on discs. Similarly you might have scratched DVDs or scratched CDs that are not on sale any longer.

The simple solution is to always make copies as a backup of those discs as soon as you buy them and before they get used and abused, but often we overlook this until it is too late!

So what can you do to reclaim the information from a scratched DVD or game disc?

There are 3 main ways you can approach this problem.

The first way is by using software and is the safest.

There are a number of specialist software products available that have DVD error correction capabilities built-in or have been specifically designed for this purpose.

The level of success in this case depends heavily on the nature of the scratch damage to the disc in question but this is by far the most desirable method as it is “non-intrusive.” Win or lose with this method the scratched disc is exactly the same as it was when you began.

Your second choice is to attempt to repair the CD DVD scratches by hand yourself.

There are any number of “how to” sites and videos available that show you how to use various products you can find at home to fix scratched DVDs or games discs. You can use toothpaste, Brasso or even Pledge!

Of course the danger here is getting it wrong! Most likely you made things worse than when you began! Naturally if you succeed… you look great!

I think of it like this: If you can usually read and follow written directions exactly and get the result you wanted you should be ok.

Even the slightest reservation means this is not how you should go!

The final method of handling CD and DVD scratch repair is by using a CD DVD scratch repair machine.

If the first method of using software or the second method of trying to do it yourself manually have failed then this is your last shot!

This subject isn’t as straightforward as it seems. CD DVD scratch repair devices must perform a pretty difficult job. All of them are attempting the re-surfacing of a polycarbonate surface well enough for a laser light to go through undisturbed.

There are many, many cheap CD DVD disc repair machines on the market today and the majority are a waste of time and money.

There are three levels of device determined by price and you get what you pay for.

This doesn’t mean you have to fork out over $1000 to buy an effective repair machine, but on the other hand obtaining perfect results from a $20 machine is not going to happen!

By far the most effective CD DVD disc repair machines for the home user come in at just over the $120 mark and for that price you can get a very good machine that will handle your discs well.
